AMO Lens Solution
A California company has voluntarily recalled its contact lens solution after new data suggests the product may increase users' risk of developing a vision-damaging parasitic infection. Santa Ana, Calif.-based Advanced Medical Optics Inc. recalled Complete MoisturePlus Multi-Purpose Solution after data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed that 21 of the 46 people interviewed who developed Acanthamoeba keratitis since January 2005 had used the product.
The Food and Drug Administration said that if left untreated, the infection can cause vision loss and corneal scarring that could require corneal transplantation. The agency said people who used the product were at least seven times more likely to develop the infection than non-users.AMO said it initiated the recall the same day it received CDC data indicating that many consumers who had used the product subsequently developed the infection.
The company said no information indicates that the infections were caused by product contamination and the recall does not involve any of its other contact lens care products.Thirty-nine of those who developed the infection wore soft contact lenses, according to the CDC. Of that number, 21 had used the recalled product, the agency said.
Users of the recalled product should seek medical attention if they experience eye pain or redness, blurred vision, sensitivity to light, excessive tearing or the persistent sensation that something is stuck in an eye, AMO said. AMO said consumers who may have the recalled product should stop using it and immediately contact the company to receive an alternative solution.
The recall takes place nearly one year after Bausch & Lomb permanently withdrew from the market its ReNu with MoistureLoc lens solution. That product was recalled May 15, 2006, after the company discovered that users had increased risk of developing fusarium keratitis, a similar fungal infection.
