Zimmer Hip Implant

Patients allege the Centralign hip implants manufactured by Zimmer were defective and caused them to suffer various injuries.

The Centralign was promoted as an improvement in hip implant technology that allowed a stronger bond between the femoral bone and the implant.

The patients’ surgeons told them their implants would last 15 to 30 years, but most of the patients had to have the implant replaced within a few years because they experienced loosening of the implant and a failure to bond with the surrounding bone.

Experts have opined in some of the cases said the implants failed because the stem design is too small for the patients for whom they were recommended. Also, a pre-applied cement coating and roughing of the implant surface made the cement bond weaker rather than stronger as Zimmer had represented, according to the experts.

In some of the cases where discovery has gone forward, Zimmer is contending that the implants loosened because the surgeons who implanted them failed to coat them with an adequate amount of cement or misaligned them.
