Elder Victimization
Sadly, elder abuse in this country is a serious problem. There are numerous stories of elderly persons being physically and financially harmed, deprived of food, water or medical attention or impoverished by relatives or caregivers. Because of this, California has enacted stringent anti-abuse laws designed to address the problems that are likely to plague the baby-boom generation
When persons age, they may become susceptible to abuse, neglect and exploitation. The elderly often times live alone, move in with their children or take residence in elderly care facilities. Victimization can occur in each of these scenarios.
As a natural part of life, the elderly may be dependent on others for their day-to-day needs. Because of this, stress is the leading contributor to elder abuse. The emotional and financial stress of caring for a dependent older person, whether in a family or professional capacity, may precipitate abuse. This, of course, is no excuse.
